Alex Murdaugh, the disgraced lawyer whose family dynasty had significant legal reach in parts of South Carolina’s Lowcountry for decades, was sentenced Friday to two consecutive life sentences, without the possibility of parole, after he was found guilty of murder his wife and 22-year-old son.

Murdaugh was sentenced to two consecutive life terms, one each for the murders of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh.

Before the judge’s sentencing, Alex Murdaugh spoke in South Carolina’s Colleton County court and said again that he did not kill his wife and child. “I am innocent. I would never hurt my wife, Maggie. And I would never hurt my son Paul,” he told the judge Friday.

Before handing down the sentence, Judge Clifton Newman said the Alex Murdaugh trial was “one of the most difficult cases” of his career, as well as for the state, the defense team and the community.
